"Heroes Reborn" picks up five years after the original series ended with Claire Bennett (Hayden Panettiere) exposing people with evolved abilities -- known as Evos -- to the world.
"We now pick up five years later with a world that has now had five years to live with these people that have these abilities, and sadly they have not accepted these people," series creator Tim Kring explains to Zap2it at San Diego Comic-Con. "They’ve persecuted and exploited them. What makes them different is that we still have to save a world. There’s a world saving event that needs to happen but we have people who are hunted and persecuted that have to save the world."
While some fan favorites from the original series are making their return on "Heroes Reborn" -- like HRG (Jack Coleman), Matt Parkman (Greg Grunberg) and Hiro Nakamura (Masi Oka) -- the new show will center on new people with terrifying abilities that have to come together to save the world that's hunting them.
"It really is about these new characters. In many ways, they occupy a similar place to the original cast in that they are ordinary people who because of discovering that they have something extraordinary and they have to save the world," Kring says.
"They still face all the same issues of how do I deal with these powers? They just have the added layer of now being hunted and haunted. I think the audience is going to relate to these characters and love these characters as much as the originals."
Not all of those new characters will bring out the warm and fuzzies though. Just as some of the original "Heroes" had darker intentions, the new cast also has people that will keep you up at night.
"There are several that have multiple agendas. Zachary Levi’s character is someone to be afraid of. You also question if there’s redemption there for him -- maybe," Kring teases.
While "Heroes Reborn" will change the landscape of the original series and introduce new people, Kring says there are still a few things that remain the same.
"HRG, Jack Coleman’s character, always keeps you wondering whether he’s going to be good or bad."
"Heroes Reborn" premieres Sept. 24 at 8 p.m. ET/PT on NBC.
