Alex Haley took the world by storm with his incredibly popular and moving book “Roots,” which follows the story of one African American family through the ages.

From the capture of the family progenitor, Kunta Kinte, by slavers in Africa, to his new life in Virginia, the story progresses down through his descendants living in the U.S all the way to Haley himself.

The History Channel has adapted the novel to a mini-series (a reboot of the original miniseries released in the ’70s), and now the emotional trailer for the new “Roots” is finally here.

The remake hosts a few familiar faces such as Anna Paquin (Nancy Holt), Jonathan Rhys Meyers (Tom Lea) and Laurence Fishburne (Alex Haley). Other key players include Anika Noni Rose (Kizzy), Emayatzy Corinealdi (Belle), Matthew Goode (William Waller) and Malachi Kirby (Kunta Kinte).

“Roots” will debut as an eight-hour event series, with the first installment premiering on May 30.
