TV’s twistiest new drama returns in just a few weeks (Jan. 29), but when it comes back the show will look as different as Annalise’s (Viola Davis) students feel after killing her husband.
Showrunner Peter Nowalk has been pretty quiet about what’s coming up in the second half of the show’s premiere season of “How To Get Away with Murder”, but there have been a few hints given for what fans can expect when the drama comes back.
First of all, Nowalk is bringing another Academy Award nominee, Cicely Tyson, into the cast. The details of Tyson’s part in the show have not been revealed, but knowing that both Annalise and her students will be under serious speculation in light of Sam’s (Tom Verica) disappearance, audiences can only hope to see Tyson and Davis go head to head in some way. She could be the lead investigator, perhaps?
The most significant change to the show will be in format though. As Nowalk shared with Entertainment Weekly in November — “HTGAWM” is done with flash forwards and flashbacks. The show will focus on the students’ current situation and how each of them deals with the pressure of the investigation.
The fall finale cliffhanger that reveals that Annalise knows Sam was murdered, and assumedly instructed Wes how to deal with the body, will also be dealt with. In the same EW interview Nowalk says that the revelation will “complicate their relationship more than either of them could imagine.” Considering those two are far from being best friends as is, those are some big words for the showrunner.
Without flashbacks, the show will not only have to focus on Sam’s disappearance but also confirming who killed Lila (Megan West). The prime suspect in that case is still Sam, but as everyone knows, the most obvious choice is never the right one when it comes to this show.
Find out how Annalise and co. deal with the new investigation when “How to Get Away with Murder” returns Jan. 29 at 10 p.m. ET/PT on ABC.
