If you thought that “How to Get Away with Murder’s” first season was full of twists and turns, showrunner Pete Nowalk says that there are still a lot of surprises coming in Season 2, and there’s a lot more to learn about the core murderous five.
“We’re going to reveal a lot about their backstories, how they met each other,” Nowalk says during the 2015 TCA summer press tour. “You think you know these people in the show, but you don’t know them at all.”
The sophomore season will pick up shortly after Annalise (Viola Davis) and Frank (Charlie Weber) discovered Rebecca’s (Katie Findlay) body in the basement — and made the realization that neither of them were the ones to kill her. That leaves one of the students: Wes (Alfred Enoch), Connor (Jack Falahee), Michaela (Aja Naomi King) or Laurel (Karla Souza) as the primary suspects.
However, Nowalk explains that as their teacher, Annalise has to wonder if she’s ultimately responsible for another dead body on their hands.
“The big question for Annalise starting the season — it’s about a week after where we left off, when Rebecca is dead — is what has she wrought?” Nowalk says.
Rebecca’s body is just another layer of wrinkles on an already complicated situation. Annalise will still be dealing with the fallout of Sam’s (Tom Verica) murder in the sophomore season as well. No one is out of the woods on that count yet either.
“There’s gonna be a lot more complications stemming from [Sam’s death],” Nowalk teases.
“How to Get Away with Murder” Season 2 returns to cap off Shondaland’s “TGIT” on Thursday, Sept. 24 at 10 p.m. ET/PT on ABC.
