(2007- ): The first situation comedy to use the Web and interact
with viewers, features a Web show within it and has allowed the kids to
grow up, but not too much. Carly (Miranda Cosgrove) has a genuine sweetness; her best friends, bad girl Sam and nerdy Freddie (Jennette McCurdy, Nathan Kress), put on the Web series with her. Carly’s older brother, Spencer (Jerry Trainor), is her wacky guardian, as their parents are in the military.

“The Middle” (2009- ): If you’re looking for a comedy to watch with your kids, this is it. Patricia Heaton is fearless as Frankie, who takes two-second “showers” in the kitchen sink to rinse her underarms and colors her gray roots with marker. Neil Flynn is her perfect match as her loving husband, Mike. Axl (Charlie McDermott), the son who seems to only eat, sleep and grunt, is solid. But the two younger kids get the funniest situations. Eden Sher (Sue) and Atticus Shaffer (Brick) are hilarious as the terminally optimistic, dorky sister and the odd, incredibly smart bookworm brother who repeats words in whispers for emphasis.

drake-and-josh.jpg“Drake & Josh” (2004-07): Drake Bell was the heartthrob, Josh Peck was the lovable teddy bear, and they played stepbrothers forced to share a room. Sure, TV has featured blended families before (“The Brady Bunch”). But with these two opposites and Drake’s kid sister, Megan (Miranda Cosgrove), who tortured them but was inevitably smarter, this series played to the sweetness of families and how tween girls really do know everything.
“Malcolm in the Middle” (2000-06): This series is proof that a genius, in this case Malcolm (Frankie Muniz), can flourish anywhere, even in a family with two older brothers, Francis and Reese (Christopher Masterson, Justin Berfield) – who seem to be training for future felons of America — and Dewey (Erik Per Sullivan), the sweet younger brother who gave gullible a pitiful name. Loving couple Hal and Lois (Bryan Cranston, Jane Kaczmarek) made it funny as they struggled to raise their four boys.
