james franco James Franco to play twins in HBO porn drama from The Wire creator

Really, the headline says it all. Hollywood’s journeyman James Franco has set his unpredictable sights on the world of 1970s pornography for a new HBO drama from “Wire” and “Treme” creator David Simon.

“The Deuce” is the story of how New York City twins got caught up in the Times Square pornography scene in the 1970s. Franco will play both twins and “Breaking Bad” and “Game of Thrones” director Michelle McClaren will direct the pilot.

In that time period, when you have pornography you also have the seedy trappings that come with that scene, like drugs and dealings with the mob — basically the makings of a delicious HBO drama.

“We are thrilled to continue our longstanding relationship with preeminent producer David Simon, whose keen eye and visceral perspective on today’s socio-economic ills have set him apart from all others,” said HBO programming president Michael Lombardo in a statement. “No one else creates with such authenticity, integrity and brilliant realism. We are so fortunate to support David’s efforts and to reap the benefits of his distinctive voice.”

In addition to “The Deuce,” HBO ordered a second untitled pilot from Simon which is still in early development but will be set in modern day on Capitol Hill.
