Warning: Spoilers ahead if you haven’t seen the “Jane the Virgin” Season 1 finale.
It’s a boy for Jane (Gina Rodriguez) and Rafael (Justin Baldoni)– but the happy union with their son is short lived. In the final moments of the telenovela’s season finale, Sin Rostro (Bridget Regan) kidnaps baby Mateo Gloriano Rogelio Solano Villanueva and disappears into the Miami night with the baby — and Jane none the wiser.
It gets worse. According to new intel from Nadine (Azie Tesfai), Sin Rostro has undergone plastic surgery since fleeing from the hotel, and the surgeon who did the job is dead. Therefore, no one alive knows what Sin Rostro now looks like to be able to track her and bring Mateo home.
Luckily Michael (Brett Dier) is a few steps ahead of Nadine. He put a tracker in her phone when she came back begging for leniency in exchange for Sin Rostro info. Michael pretends to trust her and let her go, knowing that tracking her will get them much closer to the evasive drug lord than relying on Nadine to tell them the truth.
Overall, the “Jane the Virgin” freshman season finale cast a giant hook to bring fans back for Season 2. Not only is there the task of saving baby Mateo, but Petra (Yael Grobglas) has Rafael’s leftover sperm sample.
Creator and showrunner Jennie Syder Urman teases at the end of the episode that what Petra decides to do with the sample will change everything in Season 2. Will she inseminate herself to give Mateo a half-sibling? Will she dump it just to get back at Rafael for using her?
“Jane the Virgin” returns with Season 2 this fall on The CW.
