Sunday’s (April 2) episode of “Last Man on Earth” not only revealed who was under that Yoda mask, it finally gave Erica (Cleopatra Coleman) something to do.

Honestly, we were kind of expecting Kristen Wiig’s Pamela Brinton to be the mystery person Carol (Kristen Schaal) first discovered living in the woods. Pamela hasn’t been seen since the midseason premiere — but we do have a feeling she’ll pop back up in the story soon. Instead, a young boy becomes the newest addition to the group — and the team quickly names him Jasper.

The majority of “Point Person Knows Best” is focused on Tandy’s obnoxious efforts to win over the boy’s affection, from jumping into a chocolate sundae-filled inflatable pool to buying the kid off with cigarettes. Needless to say, no one is impressed — not the group, and definitely not Jasper.

Mostly a Tandy-centric episode, Sunday’s “Last Man on Earth” finally moved Erica’s story in an interesting direction. Young Jasper chose her as his “point person” over Tandy.

Since her lover, Phil (Boris Kodjoe), died from appendicitis in Season 2’s mid-season finale, Erica has sort of faded into the background. Over the course of this season, every character has had engaging storylines — Gail’s (Mary Steenburgen) elevator fiasco, Melissa’s (January Jones) deteriorating mental state and Todd’s (Mel Rodriguez) deep guilt. If ever there was a perfect time for Erica to step back into the spotlight, now would be it.

Jasper’s arrival has brought Tandy’s own doubts about parenthood to the surface, now that he and Carol are having a child. Erica, on the other hand, was in the beginning stages of building a family with Phil. His shocking loss put her in a difficult spot — and we don’t think she’s fully gotten the closure she needs. But now the show has given her a son to watch over and connect with — perhaps that’s exactly what she needs to heal her soul and prepare for the future.

“Last Man on Earth” airs Sundays at 9:30 p.m. ET/PT on FOX.
