Gail’s (Mary Steenburgen) okay, you guys! That’s the good news “The Last Man on Earth” delivered in Sunday’s (March 19) episode. The bad news: Melissa’s (January Jones) mental state is quickly getting worse. Thanks to an impromptu road trip, the gang discovers a big clue that may cure her once and for all.
As Gail pointed out: Being trapped in a box sucks. It doesn’t really matter if it’s an elevator or locked conference room. One way or another, you’re left to face your demons head-on. With Gail being the poster-woman for positive change, Todd (Mel Rodriguez) presents a plan to Tandy (Will Forte): Drive Melissa to her hometown to find answers — any answers.
Thankfully, Todd’s plan proves successful enough. Not only do we find out Melissa’s last name — it’s Chartres (pronounced “Shart”) — but it turns out she was a well-respected real estate agent in Akron, Ohio.
All signs have pointed to a deterioration of Melissa’s mental health for quite some time. It’s in these familiar surroundings, though, that she reverts back to her old self. Remnants of a daily routine take over, giving us a peek into the woman she was before the virus hit.
As she moves from pouring cereal to her purse, Todd spots a big clue in the form of a small pill. She may not remember what it is, or why she’s taking it, but it’s clear they were to be swallowed daily. How long has it been since she’s opened this pill case?
They could simply be vitamins, but our gut tells us otherwise. “Last Man on Earth” wouldn’t be setting us up for that kind of head-slapping punchline. Gail (Mary Steenburgen) may be the perfect person to help identify the pill — she’s alluded to having knowledge in this area once or twice.
Can a quick run to the pharmacy cure what ails Melissa? Maybe, but it looks like “Last Man on Earth” is about to introduce another character into the mix: Carol (Kristen Schaal) and Gail’s family photo caught a mysterious figure in the woods. It’s always fun meeting new people, but we’ve said this many times before: When someone new joins the group, it becomes quite likely a member of Team Tandy will die.
We don’t want that to be the case. But in this end-of-the-world reality, no one’s truly safe.
“Last Man on Earth” airs Sundays at 9:30 p.m. ET/PT on FOX.
