When you think about it, the closest thing Tandy (Will Forte) has to a real friend on “Last Man on Earth” is Todd (Mel Rodriguez). Their brotherly bond has seen both men through some of the worst situations — but Sunday’s (March 26) episode opened the possibility for a new bestie to enter Tandy’s life.

Leave it to the group’s discovery of a stranger living right across the lake to give Tandy hope for a deeper connection. Sure, he has Carol (Kristen Schaal) — and their relationship has blossomed into something quite wonderful over the last three seasons — but looking at the various personalities in the group, it becomes quite clear that Tandy has no one he can really relate to. At least, not on the level he requires.

RELATED: ‘Last Man on Earth’ offers up some serious concerns about Melissa

Underneath the paste-on eyebrows and mangy beard exists a lonely boy looking for acceptance. He’s mostly gained that through the connections he’s made along the way — heck, he even got married! — but we don’t think even Carol fully comprehends who Tandy is, at least not deep down. When we first met him at the beginning of the series, the man was at the end of his rope — on the verge of committing suicide in a variety of ways. Tandy’s come a long way since then and now, the promise of a new person puts our hero in a hopeful mindset: Believing a young boy is out in the woods in need of guidance — Tandy’s guidance.

Does he have some unresolved emotions he needs to deal with? Of course, the whole group does: Todd’s (Mel Rodriguez) glimpse into Gail’s (Mary Steenburgen) elevator struggle puts his own emotional strife into perspective. And with her assistance, the two are able to finally nail down the facts about Melissa’s (January Jones) mental situation: Her prescription, before the world ended, for Clozapine — or as Melissa calls it, “Santa’s Penis” — an antipsychotic used to treat extreme bi-polar disorder, PTSD and schizophrenia.

While Carol’s bond with Gail has grown stronger, and an answer to Melissa’s problem is on the horizon, Tandy could really use a friend. Could this mysterious person in the Yoda mask give Tandy what he needs? Quite possibly. But who is it? We’ve been expecting Pamela Brinton (Kristen Wiig) to pop back up and right now would be perfect. Could she have become a Yoda mask-wearing recluse since her initial introduction?  It seems likely — although, as Tandy pointed out, they’re definitely going to be needing a doctor soon.

The Phil Lord, Chris Miller series has never been one to shy away from unpredictable story twists. In fact, the person under that mask could be a complete shock — no one’s ever accounted for Pat’s (Mark Boone Junior) whereabouts! And it’s that regular uncertainty that makes watching these survivors’ story all the more worthwhile.

“Last Man on Earth” airs Sundays at 9:30 p.m. ET/PT on FOX.
