“The Hunger Games” came to the 2014 American Music Awards care of a performance by singer Lorde of her hit “Yellow Flicker Beat” from the “Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1” soundtrack. Her turn on stage might have been the best of the night.
An energetic Lorde started her performance — the first time she’s done the song live — confined in a box before being unleashed on the audience. She then proceeded to thrash around the stage in a one-woman mosh pit as she sang, giving the track a tone as frenetic as the movie it’s featured in.
The wild act was more than welcome by the live crowd, as the entire auditorium danced along — most notably Taylor Swift, who looked more excited here than during her own performance earlier in the show.
Lorde curated the “Mockingjay Part 1” soundtrack, choosing each of the songs that appears on it. That includes one more original track from her — “Ladder Song” — and a rework of “Yellow Flicker Beat” by Kanye West.
