When you direct a film, you get to be the boss. But with Mariah Carey’s directing debut, the Hallmark Channel holiday film “A Christmas Melody,” it seems that she was quite bossy on both sides of the camera.
In this first scene from the upcoming TV film, Carey plays Melissa, an icy former high school queen bee who still considers herself hot stuff. The film follows Lacey Chabert as Kristin — a divorced LA clothing designer forced to move back to her Ohio hometown with her child. And when ex-classmate Melissa encounters her, she’s eager to flaunt how perfect her life turned out to be.
“Melissa McKean?” Chabert’s character asks Carey’s in the hallways of their old high school.
“Melissa McKean-Atkinson,” she replies. “Married now, twelve glorious years. Three children, huge four bedroom, three-and-a-half bath, two-story.”
“Wow,” Kristin replies. “That’s a lot of numbers!”
Which automatically brings two things to mind: One, for a notorious diva like Carey, she must be delivering her lines while thinking “Wow, that is a tiny house.” And two, are Mariah Carey and Lacey Chabert really supposed to be the same age? For those scoring at home, Carey was born in 1969 (or ’70, depending on who you ask) and Chabert was born in 1982. But hey, when you’re the director, you do get to be the boss.
“A Christmas Melody” debuts Dec. 19 at 8 p.m. ET/PT on the Hallmark Channel
