On the surface, it looks as though “Married At First Sight” struck out in Season 3. None of the three couples are still together. However, the reunion special did give a shred of hope for one couple, even as another crumbled.
Vanessa & Tres
In a bit of a surprise, these two broke up between the end of the six-week marriage and the reunion six months later. It’s not that we expect a reality dating show to produce couples left and right, but Vanessa and Tres always seemed so well matched. They consummated their marriage, and things seemed really great when they decided to stay together after the initial six weeks.
Unfortunately, in the ensuing months, they stopped being intimate, which gave Vanessa a lot of insecurities about herself. It also led to a huge fight.
“Things just fell apart. We stopped being physically intimate. I felt bad about myself for a while. I felt like, ‘What’s wrong with me?'” Vanessa tells Dr. Pepper Schwartz. “Then we got into this huge argument, it was terrible. I was a little bothered because Tres didn’t come home until 5 o’clock in the morning. That’s what initiated the argument. … Really mean things [were said]. Tres tells me he doesn’t have romantic feelings for me.”
Tres adds, “I will take all the blame for this. Intimacy just died out for us … and I definitely understand how that brought out a lot of insecurities for her.”
During the reunion, they did go out to eat together and things were friendly. But there is obviously no getting back together for these two.
Sam & Neil
The same cannot be said for Samantha and Neil (perhaps). These two, whose break-up at the end of the six weeks was particularly hard to watch, have remained good friends. Might there be a chance for romance down the line? Maybe. Sam reveals that even after the six weeks, they gave things another shot.
“Neil and I tried to work things out after the show ended. Then shortly thereafter we decided that we would be friends,” she says. “I have no idea what’s going to happen for us. Who knows? Maybe a few years from now we’ll be together, or maybe we’re just gonna be close friends. I know no matter what though, I’ll always be a good friend to him and I know he’ll be a good friend to me.”
Fingers crossed there’s an update on these two somewhere down the line.
Ashley & David
As for this trainwreck, they both got some screentime, but Ashley didn’t want to see David six months later, so they never interacted — which is probably for the best. What a terrible match all around.
There’s no return date yet for “Married at First Sight” Season 4, but “Married at First Sight: The First Year” premieres Tuesday, March 15 at 8 p.m. ET/PT on FYI.
