“Fifty Shades of Grey” comes out on Friday (Feb. 13) — just in time for Valentine’s Day, woo woo — and a lot of people are quite excited to see their favorite erotica novel come to life on the big screen. Especially “Today” host Matt Lauer, who is … gearing up for the release.
Just kidding, that’s an “Ellen DeGeneres” video spoof, but admit it — for a split second, you thought it was real, right? Either way, it’s probably more entertaining than the movie itself, which has not been getting great reviews and is plagued by a media tour where stars Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson showcase a shocking lack of chemistry.
The movie only has a 30% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics calling it “bland,” “terrible” and “painfully boring.” Greg Maki of the Maryland Star-Democrat sums it up thusly, “To put it plainly, there’s nothing redeeming here.” Ouch.
Will fans of the E.L. James books be put off by the bad reviews, or will their enthusiasm refuse to be dampened by the critics? That remains to be seen.
