After Meghan Trainor and Charlie Puth used the stage at the 2015 American Music Awards for their own personal makeout session, many had questions about the status of their relationship. Although it wouldn’t seem so, Puth explains how the kiss (and butt-grabbing) was unplanned and pretty awkward for him. Whodathunk?
What was supposed to be a friendly kiss was Trainor’s idea, according to Puth. “At first I was like, ‘Oh no, I don’t know if I want to do that,’” he tells Fuse. “Not because I’m so mortified to kiss somebody onstage, but I was concerned thinking it would just be about that.”
After thinking about it, Puth was eventually swayed to carry out the kiss at the end of their performance. Too bad for the “Marvin Gaye” singer, that’s what the majority of the response was after his debut AMA performance.
What was supposed to be just a friendly smooch turned out be so much more. Puth further explains how the whole experience became extremely awkward for him.
“I wanted it to be a quick thing, but they (the show producers) kept yelling in my ear, ‘Keep going! Keep going!’ And I wasn’t going to back off,” Puth recalls “I didn’t want it to look awkward. Maybe, in theory, I should have done that.”
Soon after the performance, Puth realized that the ending would be everyone’s focus so he quickly confirms their relationship on social media.
He adds, “I also don’t want people to see me out with other girls this week and be like, ‘He’s cheating on her! He’s a pig!’ No, I’m not!”
Puth also says that he hopes the chatter will die down in time for the release of his debut album, “Nine Track Mind,” in January. The album will include “Marvin Gaye” featuring Trainor.
