On Tuesday, July 31, Michael Phelps won a record 19th Olympic medal, becoming the most-decorated Olympiad of all time. He won the gold medal with the American 4 x 200-meter freestyle relay team.
The record was previously held by Soviet gymnast Larisa Latynina, who won her 18th medal in 1964 in Tokyo.
Phelps has confirmed that he will retire from the Olympics after completing his run this summer. His 18th Olympic medal was a Silver prize in the 200m butterfly on Tuesday, for
which he was the favorite to win — since he dominated at the 2004 and
2008 games. He won the 19th medal only an hour later.
“Thanks to @ryanlochte @conorjdwyer and @RickyBerens for giving me the
lead they did going in to the last 200!!!!” Phelps tweeted after getting out of the water. “Can’t ask for better team
mates then what we have on team USA!!!”
