missy franklin matt grevers 100 backstroke olympics Missy Franklin and Matt Grevers continue U.S. Summer Olympics dominance in 100m BackstrokeMissy Franklin showed up for the swimming events Monday (July 30) in beast mode. Her first race was a semifinal for the 200m Freestyle and during the race, it was a little baffling why she was lagging in fourth place and not turning on the burners. She qualified for the finals in the event, but just barely — earning eighth place, the final spot.

However, it quickly became apparent why she may not have been swimming her hardest in the semifinal. Franklin had to swim in the 100m Backstroke final less than 20 minutes later. And not only did the 17-year-old put forth a good showing in the 100 Back, she won the gold medal and set a new American record in the event with a 58.33. It was an impressive feat indeed.

Franklin has qualified for seven events. No American female swimmer has ever competed in seven events at one Olympics, let alone medaled in seven events. But she’s still on pace to try to pull it off, earning a bronze in the 4×100 Free relay and now a gold in the 100m Back.

Following Franklin’s win in the 100m Back, it was the men’s turn and they did not disappoint. In the same event, Matt Grevers won and also set a new Olympic record with a 52.16. But the U.S. also took the silver, as Grevers’ teammate Nick Thoman finished in second place with a 52.91.

Franklin’s and Grevers’ wins continue the recent U.S. domination in the 100m Backstroke, as it has been 12 years since the U.S. did not win gold in both the men’s and women’s races.
