“The Mother Daughter Experiment: Celebrity Edition” premiered on Tuesday (March 1) featuring familiar faces from reality TV to Playboy, with plenty of boob jobs, botox and acrylic nails to go around. Lifetime’s reality show is like a mix between “Marriage Boot Camp” and “The Bachelor” where famous mothers and daughters bunk in a lavish mansion and attempt to repair their broken relationships.
Overseeing it all is therapist Dr. Debbie Magids, whose tactics seem questionable at best, sadistic at worst.
Filming tell-all videos and then surprising your patients by airing these confessionals in front of the whole group seems like a terrible way to build therapist-patient trust, but the rules of reality TV are always tricky.
Heidi Pratt (“The Hills”) and her mother, Darlene, take up a good chunk of the premiere. Nervous about mending her relationship with her mother, Heidi shows up drunk to the house, where she immediately gets into a screaming match with her old rival Natalie Nunn (“Bad Girls Club”).
Her drunken catfights don’t stop there, however, as Heidi later argues with Dr. Debbie about getting called out for fighting in front of the group. She ends the night hugging the toilet after she throws up in the hallway on her way to the bathroom.
After the first night, the only mother/daughter duo who seems wells adjusted is Kim Richards (“The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills”) and her daughter Kimberly, who debate dropping out of the show and leaving the house when they realize how chaotic and crazy this experiment is turning out to be.
The other highlight of the premiere is the turbulent relationship between Courtney Stodden and her mother Krista.
Stodden became famous for marrying 50-year-old actor, Doug Hutchison, when she was just 16-years-old. Doug is the main point of contention between the mother and daughter, but not because Krista disapproves of the marriage. Their ongoing feud is actually because Krista fell in love with Doug herself and attempted to steal him away from her daughter — according to Courtney.
This new reality series is off to a fantastic start for anyone who loves watching celebrities scream at each other. At the rate things are going now, we wouldn’t be surprised if someone ends up getting pushed in the pool by episode 3.
“The Mother Daughter Experiment: Celebrity Edition” airs Tuesdays at 10 p.m. ET/PT on Lifetime
