In honor of the 20th anniversary of NBC cult classic “Mother, May I Sleep With Danger,” James Franco has produced a remake airing on Lifetime Saturday (June 18). In preparation, the network is airing the original Friday and Saturday, but if you don’t have time to watch it, Zap2it is here to help with a handy guide to the original.
Ivan Sergei is Billy Jones, an unhinged young man who kills Erin Meadows (Bryn Erin) with a cutting board and then disposes of her body.
After apparently getting away with it, Billy moves away and starts calling himself Kevin Shane (Lochlyn Munro), the popular guy in their high school who was dating Erin.
BillyKevin meets a nice young girl named Laurel (Tori Spelling), who enjoys doing lawn aerobics.
He is immediately clingy and shows hints of violence.
… yeah, like plans to MURDER YOU. But he makes up for his behavior by sending flowers in the most awesome way possible — via tuxedo’d bike messenger.
Laurel really should have known how dangerous he was by the creepy way he applies suntan oil …
… and how he makes her dye her hair blonde.
But Laurel isn’t suspicious, even if her mom Jessica (Lisa Banes) is.
Meanwhile, BIllyKevin decides to get rid of OG Kevin, though at first it looks like the movie is going a different way …
But alas, there’s no homoerotic plot here, only subtext and some shower murder.
BillyKevin gets more and more possessive, telling Laurel he’ll go crazy without her.
To which she gives a rather unbelievable response:
And then she sleeps with him. The director spends an inordinate amount of time on some spilled wine, so maybe Laurel was a virgin? Is that the symbolism? It’s unclear.
Either way, it really takes Laurel a while to catch on to BillyKevin’s dangerous side.
Even after he engages in some (terribly choreographed) fighting …
… she still accepts a mason jar full of alcohol from him. Laurel! What is WRONG with you?
Also, a note: That GIF is not altered in any way. The movie really does cut from them toasting with their wine to him putting her drugged body in a bed.
Lauren manages to escape, but BillyKevin is not giving up so easily.
Um, maybe because you do things like this:
However, it is worth noting that the roll across the top of the car is maybe the greatest move in the history of made-for-TV movies. Ninja!
Anyway, Laurel takes off in a canoe, though she really isn’t going to get very far paddling like that.
Then things get a little “Friday the 13th”-y.
But she escapes (again) and mom is there, hugs all around …
… until BillyKevin comes back for one last scare.
Laurel saves the day, hooray!
But is he really dead?
Note: This GIF is 20 seconds long, but it easily could have been 60 seconds. The movie literally does this for 60 seconds.
And then, twist!
