The latest “New Girl” may have been called “Cece’s Boys” and focused on Cece’s (Hannah Simone) burgeoning model management company, but the gem storyline was actually what the three other boys got up to Tuesday (Jan. 17).
In response to Winston (Lamorne Morris) and Nick (Jake Johnson) having lost touch with a good friend from high school and not really caring that much about it, Schmidt (Max Greenfield) decides the three of them need to undergo some kind of bonding ritual.
The initial suggestions alone would have made a priceless episode — Schmidt suggests a time share, Winston suggests an actual ritual, with burning chicken bones (because of course he does) and Nick takes the cake with:
“I’m really ready to get super weird into metal detectors if you guys are… look for treasure, nickels, dimes, quarters. If you find enough said treasure or change, supplement your income. It’s also entertaining. There’s an endorphin rush.”
Nick: The absolute best.
But the fun doesn’t stop there. Schmidt decides the right call is a men’s spa day — woo! — complete with scrotum waxing… And you can imagine Nick and Winston’s reactions.
Schmidt: “You’re being so dramatic right now.”
Nick: “I’ll say it without any drama — I don’t want the hairs ripped off my testicles by a stranger. I think they’re there for a reason.”
Winston: “Guys, I have off-the-charts follicle strength, OK? It’ll be a blood bath down there, a real crime scene. So I’m leaning no.”
But in the end, Nick and Winston man up because Schmidt confesses that now that he’s moving out, he’s worried about becoming that weird guy Nick and Winston were once friends with, but who they have now completely lost touch with.
It’s not a baseless fear when friend groups grow and change and Schmidt is just so sad about it that Nick and Winston brave the scrotum waxing –which awesomely plays out like the three of them are seeing action in war together.
It’s a nice love letter to the three guys. The show may be called “New Girl,” but it has really always been “come for Zooey Deschanel, stay for the amazing other characters.”
It’ll be a sad day when “New Girl’s” run ends and there are no more Winston-Nick-Schmidt shenanigans on TV, because their brand of weirdness and quirk is utterly delighful and quite rare on TV.
“New Girl” airs Tuesdays at 8 p.m. ET/PT on FOX.
