The holidays can be a little schizophrenic when it comes to fashion. Though holiday parties tend to help keep things glamorous and elegant, every other minute of the season tends to pull us toward wacky and unfortunate. It’s difficult to say who’s to blame. All we know is that there’s a time-honored tradition of wearing sweaters that should require a permit and shirts that look like they’re made of actual fruitcake. Frankly, you don’t even need to have the sound on your television to know it’s the season. For weeks we’ve been paraded a heaping handful of sartorial nuts.
Aside from Halloween, there is probably not a more drastic transformation in our wardrobe than in the 24 hours spanning Christmas Eve and Christmas morning. On the Eve, we’re probably trying to look our best at any last minute parties or church functions. But somewhere in the night, sugarplum fairies swoop in and put us in some of the weirdest pajamas and nightgowns imaginable. And we wouldn’t have it any other way. Virginia (Martha Plimpton) and Burt Chance (Garret Dillahunt) of “Raising Hope” on Fox get it. Footed pajamas on adults are the great equalizer. But unless you live in the Yukon, they’re only appropriate on Christmas morning. Surprisingly, they’ve made a comeback in recent years and you can buy them at Kmart and Walmart. But if you’re looking for ones with a little more style (say fleece or chenille), we like and

Ever since the “Lord of the Rings” films came out, dressing like an elf has meant slipping on something that belongs at a Renaissance festival. But throughout the rest of history, they were the affable labor force of Santa Claus. As of late, their greatest advocate is Elf on a Shelf. That’s why we were so thrilled to see Lemon Breeland (Jaime King) of The CW’s “Hart of Dixie” rock the Santa’s helper look on a recent episode. Unfortunately for us, that outfit isn’t available off the rack, but some red felt, jingle bells and a hot glue gun would probably be enough to confuse all but the most observant St. Nicks. Otherwise you can purchase something similar at costume shops. (A huge bowl of eggnog is the perfect accessory.)

Leave it to Jess (Zooey Deschanel) of Fox’s “New Girl” to remind of us of Christmases past.
Not that long ago (OK, it was during the Eisenhower administration), teal, turquoise, aquamarine and a host of other blue-green shades were go-to colors during the holiday season. It’s a perfect hue to stand out in a sea of red and green while still giving a nod to the season. This is a Suzette coat in new teal from Kate Spade which features a funnel neck, off-centered bow detail and a deep pleat faux vent in the back. The polka dot lining helps bring the quirk. The coat is best appreciated while standing next to an aluminum Christmas tree.
