The Season 7 premiere of “Pretty Little Liars” was chock full of #SaveHanna action, but … fans pretty much know by now that Hanna (Ashley Benson) is going to be found safe. What was infinitely more interesting were the breadcrumbs dropped about Mary Drake (Andrea Parker). Spoiler warning: Don’t keep reading if you haven’t seen the episode “Tick-Tock, Bitches.”
So, when Mary paid a late-night visit to Spencer (Troian Bellisario), she was extremely interested in the Hastings family — she knew on sight that Spencer had to be either Spencer or Melissa, she commented that Spencer and Melissa could be twins and she asked where Spencer’s parents were, revealing that she knows the Hastings parents and met the two daughters once upon a time.
In regards to Peter and Veronica, Mary’s exact words were, “We used to have a lot in common.” She also said of the Hastings, “I know enough about your family to know they are excellent secret-keepers.”
Now, this could be in reference to Peter’s affair with Jessica and him being Jason’s (Drew Van Acker) father. But it feels like more than that, because the “Pretty Little Liars” writers don’t put these kinds of loaded comments in for no reason.
When Zap2it interviewed Marlene King prior to the Season 7 premiere, we asked about Charlotte's (Vanessa Ray) biological father -- because doesn't it sort of feel like somehow the Hastings are connected to all the DiLaurentis/Drakes? However, King told us, "We talked about that and it's possible we will visit that when we come back in 7b, but in 7a, that's not part of the story."
On the other hand, King also told us that Mona (Janel Parrish) was really dead back at the end of Season 5a. So perhaps Charlotte's father isn't something the writers are prepared to talk about yet.
Regardless of whether Charlotte's father is important, it was also revealed in the Season 7 premiere that the reason Mary Drake was initially put into Radley Sanitarium was because a child under her care died while Mary was babysitting. She was back in Radley on and off until she was finally released for good 23 years ago from this episode.
Based on what Mary was saying at Spencer's house, do you think it could possibly be that Melissa was a twin and the twin died under Mary's care? Melissa is seven years older than Spencer, this all could have happened before Spencer was born. And because of Peter's connection to Jessica and Jason, maybe it was all kept quiet?
Food for thought. We're probably way off, since this is "Pretty Little Liars" and it's nearly impossible to figure things out before they're revealed, but seriously ... there has to be a connection between Mary, Jessica and the Hastings family that is yet to be revealed.
