FOX revealed Thursday (Aug. 6) at the 2015 TCA summer press tour that a “Prison Break” sequel is in the works.
“[Creator Paul Scheuring] is in the middle of writing it right now,” says FOX Television Group chairman and CEO Dana Walden. “I would describe it as a bit of a sequel. It picks up the characters several years after we left them in the last season of the show.”
Walden also confirms that both Wentworth Miller and Dominic Purcell will be back.
“The brothers will be back. Some of the iconic characters from that show will be back,” says Walden. “I don’t think Paul knows exactly where he’s going over the 10-episode arc, but it definitely will address some questions that were set up at the end of the series.”
Co-chairman and CEO Gary Newman adds that Scheuring pitched a “very detailed,” “great story” and they’re “pretty confident we’re going to straight to series with it.” Newman also says that the sequel will pick up after Season 4. While it won’t be ignoring the straight-to-video episode wherein Michael (Miller) died, Walden says there will be a “logical, believable” explanation “for why our characters are alive and still moving around the world.”
As for a timetable for the “Prison Break” sequel, Newman tells Zap2it it’s still being decided.
“I think the likelihood is, if all goes smoothly, we’ll be shooting it sometime after the first of the year,” says Newman. “In theory it could be ready for summer, but it maybe something we want to hold for the 2016-17 broadcast season.”
