“Revenge” ended on Sunday (May 10) in quite a bittersweet fashion. Emily/Amanda (Emily VanCamp) literally sails into the sunset with Jack (Nick Wechsler), but there is one twisted drawback: She keeps on having a nightmare that her life-saving heart transplant came courtesy of her eternal enemy Victoria Grayson (Madeleine Stowe).
Although fans might never know if it was just a dream or if it actually happened, “Revenge” showrunner Sunil Nayar tells Zap2it that an idea he had for the Season 5 premiere would have kept the heart transport storyline alive.
“One of the ideas that we had going into next season is — which we thought would keep the heart debate alive really interestingly — was just the thought that, if in the season premiere next year… if a woman shows up and says to Emily, ‘That’s actually my son’s heart in your chest and he was killed under mysterious circumstances,'” says Nayar. “And you can either then find out if the woman is lying or if the woman is telling the truth.”
Nayar goes on to explain that, with Emily/Amanda finding out that her heart came to her through an unfortunate way, it might drive her into action and look “to avenge what happened” to the young man. Of course, it would also keep fans on their toes wondering the truth behind the heart.
“It’s more the idea of what would make her give up the life that she fought so hard for now that she’s with Jack at this point in time,” says Nayar. “Keeping the question alive of the nightmare that she’s wrestling with of the actual truth of it felt like it gave a good sort of psychological story engine for next season.”
