It’s tough to be the first contestant sent home, and on the Season 8 premiere of “RuPaul’s Drag Race,” the unlucky queen to get shooed off the runway first was the beautiful Naysha Lopez.
Zap2it got to speak with Lopez about how she felt after discovering that she wasn’t going to be this year’s winner, her true feelings on having to dance to Lady Gaga and who she thinks will take this year’s crown.
Did you study the show before coming on?
Naysha Lopez: I watched the whole show, every episode. But there’s no way to prepare for this. Just gotta be yourself.
If assigned a different runway challenge, do you think you would’ve done better?
It’s funny because Robbie Turner assigned all the challenges, and the one thing I said to myself was please don’t get Drag on a Dime. Sure enough, I got Drag on a mother****** Dime. I was pissed.
Did you let Robbie know how you felt?
Well, the first real conversation Robbie had with anyone, was with me. We just had this great conversation, I’m fresh in his head. So, when [Rupaul] asks him to assign [the first challenge], I’m the first person to pop in his mind. I had a feeling that’s how it would turn out. I wasn’t mad at Robbie.
Are you fan of Lady Gaga’s ‘Applause?’ Do you wish a different song was picked?
So, I’m not the one that is like let me love this person because everyone does, and that’s what happened with a lot gays and Lady Gaga, like “She’s all about the gays! I lover her!”
But, no. She’s a true artist, and I’ve grown to appreciate and love Gaga, but did I want to lip-sync to her? Absolutely, not. This is not a song I perform to or, that I knew. I was like “f***.”
How was seeing the fan reactions after your episode aired?
I got to watch it at my home bar, so I got to do it with friends and family. I got a good reaction any time I was on the screen or whatever, but [in the end] it was a huge disappointment. You could’ve heard a pin drop when I got eliminated, because everyone was like what the f*** what happened? But it was blessing to be in Chicago with friends and family.
How long did you have to keep this a secret?
We filmed last summer. It’s been like 8 months.
Yeah, it’s been forever. The hardest part is when all your family and friends are telling you, “Oh, you totally win don’t you,” and you’re just like, “Uhm. Yeahhhh. You’ll see what happens!” Ya know? It becomes quite the challenge because you don’t want to disappoint anyone. At first, that’s what I feel like I did.
But then those feelings quickly changed. I got so much support because this has been such a good thing … not a good thing, a great thing.
How do you feel about Derrick Barry?
I love having Britney Spears’ dad on the show! Everyone sees Britney Spears. I see Britney’s Spears’ dad.
No, I love Derrick. He’s awesome. He’s worked at my home bar, Hydrate nightclub, so I got to know him a little bit before all this happened. He’s a hard working individual and I appreciate that.
Who do you think is going to win this season?
Everyone on this season holds a special place in my heart. I love Lalia McQueen. Thorgy Thor is one of my most favorite people ever. Then there Bob The Drag Queen, who’s one of the most consistent entertainers. If I’m going to root for one person, it’s going to be Bob The Drag Queen.
“RuPaul’s Drag Race” airs Monday nights at 9 p.m. ET/PT on Logo.
