mens 4x100 relay 2012 summer olympics Ryan Lochte loses lead in men's 4x100 Free relay at 2012 Summer OlympicsThe U.S. swimming fans aren’t used to seeing Ryan Lochte fade down the backstretch, but that’s exactly what happened during the men’s 4×100 m Freestyle relay. Going into the anchor leg, Lochte was given a decent lead by his teammates, Nathan Adrian, Michael Phelps and Cullen Jones.

But after the turn, France’s Agnel Yannick turned on the burners and Lochte faded, propelling France to a bit of an upset victory. The Australians were actually the favorites going into the relay, but they finished fourth place behind France, the U.S. and Russia.

After the race, Phelps said of the relay, “We knew it was gonna be tough … the French swam well. The thing about relays is it’s start to finish and they swam a good race. We put our four best guys out there and we went out there and swam as fast as we could.”

And Lochte added, “It’s not my normal speciality, but like Michael said, we put the best four guys and we went out there and raced tough and came up a little short.”
