Blake Shelton became the latest in a long line of celebrities pulling double duty on “Saturday Night Live” by acting as both host and musical guest in the same episode this week. He’s an accomplished singer/guitarist to be sure and always seems like a fun guy on “The Voice,” but can he host “SNL”? Turns out the answer is yes.
To qualify that — Shelton wasn’t given much outside his wheelhouse in terms of humor. He got to be the straight man and/or sing a lot. But he showed himself game for almost anything and comfortable doing live sketches, which are two key components an “SNL” host definitely needs.
Just in the first half hour, Shelton was part of four solid sketches spoofing “Hee Haw,” “The Bachelor” (this one was called “Farm Hunk”), those dopey inspirational country songs that are always massive hits — called “Wishin’ Boot,” because of course it was — and a “Family Feud” sketch that pitted “American Idol” vs. “The Voice.”
After a painfully bad Weekend Update and a weird, unfunny prison sketch, Shelton was back in a spoof of this viral video that was pretty great and then he was part of a magician sketch that had its moments. Overall, not a bad job. Videos below.
