shannara chronicles

If “The Shannara Chronicles” has mastered one thing, it is the art of the cliffhanger. This week’s episode, titled “Pykon,” leaves us with so many questions.

Is Allanon (Manu Bennett) actually dead? How on earth can Wil (Austin Butler), Amberle (Poppy Drayton), and Eretria (Ivana Baquero) survive that fall? Did this love triangle just get way more interesting?

Allanon’s potential death is the result of that pesky changeling and its never-ending trickery. Playing on Arion’s (Daniel MacPherson) desire to make his father proud, the changeling manipulates the prince into unearthing a secret weapon from the catacombs of the palace.

Obviously, this is a terrible idea, but you have to admire Arion’s attempt at heroics. He truly does think he’s following his father’s orders and protecting the palace from a corrupted druid. If only he realized that his father’s sudden personality transplant into a druid-hating-murderer was the slightest bit strange.

It’s very unlikely that Allanon’s death will stick, since we’ve kind of seen him kick the bucket a few times before, but this death did look much more permanent than the others.

Meanwhile, the love triangle is still alive and well between Wil, Amberle, and Eretria deep in the mountains. Admittedly, the hidden elf fortress of torture – complete with creepy child and lecherous old man – does not create quite the same level of fear or urgency that immortal demons do.

The detour through the mountains also took us on a detour from Amberle’s quest and the central plot of the show, but hopefully these characters can get back on track next week.

The mountains did give us one very important development, in the form of a real kiss between Amberle and Wil. After her terrifying torture session, Amberle finally gives in to her feelings for Wil, much to Eretria’s disappointment.

And yet surprisingly enough, the triangle between these three characters might not stay a triangle if Eretria is serious about trying to seduce Amberle. Now that’s a twist on the typical teen triangle.

Which pairing are you most eager to see develop on “The Shannara Chronicles?”

“The Shannara Chronicles” airs Tuesdays at 10 p.m. ET.PT on MTV
