“Sherlock” returns to “Masterpiece” in just over a month and as a special Thanksgiving treat, PBS released seven new photos of Season 4 Wednesday (Nov. 23).
In the one billed as a “family portrait,” Sherlock (Benedict Cumberbatch) looks none too pleased at the arrival of Watson (Martin Freeman) and Mary’s (Amanda Abbington) bundle of joy. It remains to be seen how the bouncing baby girl’s presence will affect the crime-solving duo’s relationship — but based on the photo, it looks like Sherlock and Watson might have some things to work through in the new season.
Other new photos include a couple of Mycroft Holmes (Mark Gatiss), one of which show the two Holmes siblings together. They look like they’re tolerating each other, but viewers know the Mycroft-Sherlock relationship is always fraught with tension, so we would expect Season 4 to be no different.
Finally, there’s a sneak peek at Toby Jones as new “Sherlock” villain Culverton Smith. The character is from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s original Holmes story “The Dying Detective,” where Sherlock feigns terminal illness to get Smith to confess to murdering his nephew, which also implicates him in the attempted murder of Holmes. It’s unknown how strictly the Smith-centric episode will stick to the original story, but showrunner Steven Moffat previously told Collider that Jones is “the darkest villain we’ve had.”
“This guy is the purest evil. Sherlock is actually appalled by him. He’s the most evil villain we’ve had. I don’t think that when you see it, you will disagree. He’s horrific,” says Moffat.
“Sherlock” Season 4 premieres Sunday, Jan. 1, 2017 on PBS.
