Everyone knows it can take some time to move on after a breakup — but John Mayer took this concept to a whole new level during his “Late Late Show” monologue Friday (Feb. 6).
The singer, who just finished up a three-night guest hosting gig on the late night program, joked about attending Sunday’s Grammy Awards along with his ex-girlfriend Taylor Swift.

“You can see me at the Grammys doing what I do best, being avoided by Taylor Swift,” Mayer teased during his monologue. “That won’t make the Internet at all.” After delivering the joke, the singer seemed pretty pleased with himself laughing with the crowd.
Although the two stars dated for only a short time in 2009, it appears Swift made quite an impression on Mayer, since he is still trying to deliver burns six years after the fact. Swift fans already know the singer has dealt with her feelings from her brief relationship with the known womanizer, as she penned the song “Dear John ” about Mayer. The two collaborated on the Mayer track “Half of My Heart,” but let’s just say Swift’s song was definitely not written in the same loving tone.
“It made me feel terrible,” Mayer said regarding “Dear John” to Rolling Stone in 2012. “Because I didn’t deserve it. I’m pretty good at taking accountability now, and I never did anything to deserve that. It was a really lousy thing for her to do.”
Interestingly Swift bestie Ed Sheeran was Mayer’s musical guest on the late night show. Mayer and Sheeran are scheduled to perform at the Grammy ceremony Feb. 8.
Although Mayer seems to still be working through his issues, Swift looks to be doing better than ever judging by her recent Instagram posts. The singer excitedly revealed Feb. 5 her date for Grammy day will be longtime best friend Abigail Lauren with an adorable throwback photo of the two.
