In a world as fraught as “Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD’s,” it’s hard to imagine any of the central characters has time to maintain a healthy relationship. That hasn’t stopped the writers from leaning into a number of complicated romances, and the fans have started shipping in kind.
They aren’t the only ones susceptible to the romantic groundwork being laid on the ABC drama. Zap2it spoke to the members of the cast to find out which moments tugged their heart strings — and in doing so, they revealed some telling info about who they’re shipping.
Clark Gregg (Phil Coulson)
Gregg has two favorite moments, and they appropriately cater to his two love interests on the show. “I loved the ballroom dancing episode with Agent May,” he says. “I loved when Audrey the cellist showed up, and I love Amy Acker so much it was really frustrating to me that they could not have a conversation without putting her in danger. I hope that gets paid off.” So does Acker, for what it’s worth.
Brett Dalton (Grant Ward)
It shouldn’t be a surprise to Dalton fans that his favorite romantic scenes are between Skye and Ward, as he openly admits he is a SkyeWard fan. “There have been a few,” he says. “I think the scenes with Skye and Ward in episode 8 after the Asgardian staff stuff, there’s a moment in there — at least I tried to act — where my guard is down and I might entertain the possibility of something happening, and then we both decide that that’s not there.
“But there is just a moment and it’s really small but it’s there — I think, I hope — and that’s what we were going for. I think that’s one of the first really clear indications, because before it was, ‘Rah! Frustration!’ and ‘Who is this person? Coulson, why are you giving her all these responsibilities and going on missions? She’s not even a SHIELD agent!’ … That was the first time where I saw maybe my frustration is something.”
Ming-Na Wen (Melinda May)
Self-professed Philinda shipper Wen says: “For me I’m going to play favoritism with the Philinda fans. I just love any moments when May and Coulson share a really private, intimate moment together where they really express their feelings, whether it’s because of their love and their friendship or the bond as SHIELD agents. There’s just such loyalty and undying trust, even in turmoil when they don’t think they can trust each other. There’s just such a bond between the two of them that I find very romantic and I think a lot of us wish we have that sort of a soulmate or good friend that we can always turn to.”
Nick Blood (Lance Hunter)
Sorry Bobbi/Lance lovers, but FitzSimmons is Blood’s favorite romance on “Agents of SHIELD.” “It’s got to be Fitz and Simmons — just in general really, but the end of the first season,” he says. “It’s heartbreaking. Hopefully one day.”
Chloe Bennet (Skye/Daisy)
Bennet’s pick hits quite close to home. “My favorite ‘romantic’ super duper adorable Valentine’s Day moment from the show has to be from ‘The Girl in the Flower Dress’ when Skye has a run-in with her hacker ex-boyfriend Miles. That episode has a special place in my heart ’cause that’s how I met my real-life boyfriend, Austin [Nichols]. We didn’t end up together on the show, but we won in real life,” she shares, adding in an “overly done Valley girl voice”: “We like totally like fell in love!”
