With Abbie (Nicole Beharie) out of the picture, Ichabod Crane’s (Tom Mison) mission in Season 4 is to find a new Witness to partner with. Friday’s (Jan. 13) episode, “In Plain Sight,” finally presented the identity of that person to Crane and, well… Things just got a lot more interesting.

Remember Diana’s (Janina Gavankar) daughter Molly (Oona Yaffe)? The one who inexplicably stopped speaking just a few weeks ago? Well, the episode opens on a vision Crane is having — and the two come face-to-face. It doesn’t take too long for Ichabod to realize the new Witness is his new partner’s daughter. And when he finally meets Molly, the girl miraculously speaks.

It’s an interesting choice to put Crane together with a child. The inevitable horrors Malcolm Dreyfuss (Jeremy Davies) plans to resurrect are only going to get tougher. But we’re still not completely sold: Ever since Abbie’s departure, it’s been a little hard to buy the chemistry between all these new characters. Heck, if it weren’t pertinent to the overall narrative, we’d never peg Diana to be Molly’s mother. That lack of emotional connection feels starkly lacking throughout the episodes we’ve seen so far.

The discovery of this new Witness is the main plot of the episode — but that doesn’t mean Ichabod, Diana and the rest of the crew didn’t have their hands full with another supernatural case. This time, a group of beautiful witches set out to wreak havoc on Washington — and an episode of “Charmed,” this most definitely was not.

Clunky dialog and cheesy special effects aside, this monster-of-the-week storyline didn’t serve much purpose other than to cement Dreyfuss’s mission to collect supernatural artifacts. But for what purpose? It’s obvious nothing good will come of this — and if the episode’s final moments have anything to tell us, it’s that things are about to get very real for Ichabod.

The Headless Horseman is coming to Washington. If ever there was a time to let Diana in on her daughter’s role in all of this, no would be it.

“Sleepy Hollow” airs Fridays at 9 p.m. ET/PT on FOX.
