john hawkes gi So who is 'Winter's Bone's' John Hawkes, anyway?Until this morning’s Oscar nominations announcement, John Hawkes managed to fly under the radar. But the best-supporting actor nominee (for “Winter’s Bone”) has been steadily building a solid career built on quirky roles in film and TV; roles that have been lauded by critics and (mostly) enjoyed by fans — even if we tended to refer to him as “that guy from ‘Deadwood.'”

So, to get us all up to speed on Hawkes and his eminently watchable work, a few highlights:

  • “Winter’s Bone”: Hawkes played a menacing — but ultimately loyal — uncle Teardrop to Jennifer Lawrence in the Ozark Mountains-set mystery.
  • “Lost”: Fans (we’re including ourselves here) were mostly perplexed by the addition of Hawkes’ character — Lennon — in the final season. He was dropped into the narrative, delivered a perfectly respectable if superfluous performance, then disappeared long before the series finale.
  • “Deadwood”: Although Ian McShane and Timothy Olyphant were the breakout stars of HBO’s gritty and fabulously foul-mouthed frontier drama, Hawkes held his own as Sol Starr, co-owner of the town’s new hardware store and best friend to Olyphant’s sherriff Seth Bullock.
  • “Me and You and Everyone We Know”: Hawkes co-starred as Miranda July’s love interest in the much-buzzed-about 2005 indie.

Hawkes has also done his time on TV — with guest spots on ER,” “24” and “Northern Exposure” — and in his fair share of projects he’d probably prefer we not highlight here (“S. Darko,” anyone?).

Look for him next in FX’s “Outlaw Country” with Mary Steenburgen and the action thriller “Contagion” with Matt Damon, Gwyneth Paltrow, Kate Winslet and Marion Cotillard.
