FOX’s long-running dance competition series “So You Think You Can Dance” returned on Monday (May 30) with a new season, and a new look. Season 13 is dubbed “The Next Generation” for a reason, with kid dancers age 8 – 13 competing for the title of “America’s Favorite Dancer.” It’s an interesting direction to go, and one that has led many to wonder if this may be the final season for the Nigel Lythgoe-created series.
All gimmicks aside — seriously, the new social media-themed opening credit sequence is a little annoying — there were some amazing performers that took the stage during the Los Angeles auditions. It seems that a variety of dance styles were represented from hip hop to ballroom, but one young hopeful stands out above the rest.
Merrick is a normal 10-year-old boy that has a passion for both surfing and robots. Growing up by the beach, venturing out into the ocean sounds like a normal activity. The robot thing? Well, come on … who didn’t dig on “Transformers” and “Voltron” back in the day? But something changed for young Merrick after watching Cyrus — aka Glitch — perform throughout Season 9 of the show.
Who says you can’t learn new things from watching TV? After seeing the hip hop dancer present his unique animation style on the “SYTYCD” stage back in 2012, Merrick taught himself to move like his on-screen hero. Surprising everyone with his routine, it’s safe to say that the young man will be one to watch throughout this year’s competition.
“So You Think You Can Dance: The Next Generation” airs Mondays at 8 p.m. ET/PT on FOX.
