In the age of DVR and binge watching, spoiler alerts have become a serious dinner party hazard. “Portlandia” and “Key & Peele” have now taken on the phenomenon — but who did it better?
In the more recent “Key & Peele” sketch, two couples try to enjoy a nice dinner together but everything from the last episode of “Game of Thrones” to the weather comes with a spoiler alert warning. Conversation naturally gets awkwardly silent until everyone finally agrees that moving on to cheesecake is the best option. That is until Keegan-Michael Key blurts out the worst spoiler of all — we’re all going to die some day — and ruins everything.
“Portlandia’s” version sticks pretty firmly to TV spoilers, but it is amazing how far back a spoiler alert is supposed to hold up. Are there really people who don’t know Cory and Topanga get married on “Boy Meets World”? No wonder they’re offended by “Breaking Bad” plot points and the reveal of one of “The Wire’s” most heartbreaking deaths. If you aren’t up to date with all of TV’s most notable shows, this is one couple you want to avoid eating with.
