The theme of the “Suits” Season 5 summer finale is family — and what both Mike (Patrick J. Adams) and Harvey (Gabriel Macht) would be willing to give up for theirs. However, their sacrifices don’t end up the way they expect.
In Mike’s case, it means resigning from the firm to prevent his future family with Rachel (Meghan Markle) from having his fraud identity held over them, constantly worried that the life they’ve built for themselves will come crashing down. Mike is taking the morally superior and sensible road for the first time since the series began, really.
Ironically, as he hands over his letter of resignation to Harvey, he’s put in handcuffs for conspiracy to commit fraud. That means when “Suits” returns in January the primary mystery will be figuring out turned Mike in. Was it Claire (Troian Bellisario), the spurned ex who despises Mike for making a mockery of her profession? Was it Trevor (Tom Lipinski), the former best friend turned goody two-shoes? Or was it Father Sam (Scott Michael Campbell) to force Mike to atone for his sins?
If Mike is expecting Harvey to help him get out of this jam, he may be out of luck because Harvey has also stepped down from the firm. He made a last minute deal with Charles Forstman (Eric Roberts) to step down to stop Daniel Hardman (David Costabile) from taking over the firm. That means that the names on the wall — Pearson Spector Litt — will have to change again.
As Jessica (Gina Torres) points out, when you work for her you’re family. Now two of her own are in deep trouble and when Season 5 returns she, Louis (Rick Hoffman) and the rest of the firm will have to batten down the hatches to keep Harvey in the fold and to save Mike from the hammer of the law. Both Harvey and Mike have now proven they are willing to make big sacrifices to save their families — whether it’s the firm or their personal ones — and now it is time to see what those families will do for them.
“Suits” Season 5 continues in January on USA.
