In celebration of 200 episodes on the air, “Supernatural” is dedicating Tuesday’s (Nov. 11) episode to its fans with a special “musical-ish” escapade for the Winchester brothers. The creative team have promised tons of meta jokes, fandom shout-outs and “musical moments” but have admitted the episode will be pretty skimpy on cast members singing.
Is that fair? No, it isn’t. Sure, fans have gotten a good dose of Demon Dean rocking the mic in Season 10, but what about the others? In anticipation of the 200th episode, “Fan Fiction,” Zap2it asked the cast of “Supernatural” on the carpet of the episode premiere party in Vancouver what their go-to karaoke songs are.
Check out their choices and let us know who you think would win in a “Supernatural” family karaoke battle.
1. Jared Padalecki: ‘Friends in Low Places,’ Garth Brooks
Jared chooses a country classic for his karaoke song of choice, citing his Texas roots as inspiration. His strategy is to pick a song he knows he can get through: “I grew up karaoke-ing in Texas. Even though Garth Brooks has an amazing voice, that’s just one of those songs you get through and people forgive you and they drink.”
2. Jensen Ackles: ‘El Paso,’ Marty Robbins
It seems that Dean’s prowess at the karaoke bar may have been inspired by the actor who plays him. Jensen shows no fear when revealing his go to karaoke number — “You want to know? You really want to know? It is a game changer. It is a drop the mic, walk off and get in the car and know I just killed it — ‘El Paso’ by Marty Robbins. Totally off the wall, no one sees it coming and then I crush it.”
3. Misha Collins: ‘I Got A Boy,’ Girls’ Generation*
Of course Misha just wants to fit in at the bar, so he doesn’t have a staple karaoke song. Instead he tries to sing one of the songs from whichever Asian country the bar owners come from which doesn’t always go well. “Usually, when I’m at a karaoke bar will endeavor to sing one of the songs in Vietnamese or Chinese or Japanese,” he says. “It goes badly. It probably comes across as racist and off key but I do it nonetheless.”
*Since Misha didn’t officially pick a song but needs one for this exercise, Zap2it has assigned him K-Pop mega group Girls’ Generation.
4. Mark Pellegrino: ‘Sweet Transvestite,’ Tim Curry (from ‘The Rocky Horror Picture Show’)
Of course Lucifer tries to cheat by picking two songs, but Zap2it made the editorial choice for him because obviously “Sweet Transvestite” is a killer karaoke song and serious money would be paid to see this happen. “My go-to karaoke song is one of two. I either do ‘Sweet Transvestite’ or ‘Big Balls’ by AC/DC. I have to get a little more drunk for other songs, but those two are my repertoire.”
5. Felicia Day: ‘Open Arms,’ Journey
It almost seems unfair to allow someone with as beautiful a voice as Felicia Day into this competition because c’mon. She even sings a little bit of the song on the carpet and it is beautiful. Also, Journey is a staple of any proper karaoke outing. “I really get into it,” she says. “If you can keep up with the karaoke on that you’re the karaoke master.”
Note: Mark Sheppard (Crowley) chose to abstain from the karaoke battle because it is apparently a thing he doesn’t do. “I refuse to karaoke. I was a musician. That’s my idea of nails on a chalkboard,” he says. “You can’t do something like that to me. That’s my idea of hell — it’s a line to a karaoke machine.”
