Mollee Gray attends Teen Beach Movie 2 premiere

It’s time to go back to the beach with “Teen Beach Movie 2” — but things are getting even more twisted for the Disney Channel original movie sequel.

The first “Teen Beach Movie” became the second highest rated Disney Channel original movie ever, falling behind only the pop culture behemoth that was “High School Musical.” That kind of performance creates a sort of pressure for a sequel — can it match “HSM 2”?

Mollee Gray, who plays Giggles in both “Teen Beach Movie” films and was a dancer in both the “High School Musical” movies, thinks “Teen Beach Movie 2” can definitely reach that challenge.

“I definitely think it has the potential to be as big if not bigger than ‘High School Musical.’ There’s a different type of audience,” she tells Zap2it. “[‘Teen Beach Move’] triggers adults and teens and kids. It’s such a well-rounded family movie that I think with any audience it can be great.”

This time around the “Wet Side Story” gang is ditching their ’60s beach musical universe and getting sucked into the real world. That means Lela (Grace Phipps), Tanner (Garrett Clayton), Giggles and the rest have to try to find a way to blend in with Mack (Maia Mitchell) and Brady (Ross Lynch) until they can find their way back home to Big Momma’s.
Gray promises that the sequel takes the humor of the first movie and ups the ante for Round 2.
“I think the sequel is so much funnier than the first one, and I thought the first one was really funny,” she says. “I think what’s cool about this sequel is it’s not like there’s continuous drama or what’s happening next. There’s still the friendship and bonds, but it’s a whole new story for the fans to fall in love with.”
Even better — the audience doesn’t need to have seen the first movie to get into the next installment.
“You don’t have to see the first one to see the sequel because it’s just as funny even if you haven’t,” Gray says. “The second movie is just hilarious. It’s amazing.”
“Teen Beach Movie 2” premieres Friday, June 26 on The Disney Channel.
