Ever since “The Challenge: Rivals III” premiered, it was obvious to both the audience and veteran competitors that there were way too many “Are You the One?” cast members around. Aside from the fact that no one watches that MTV dating show, there’s a huge difference coming into “The Challenge” series after competing to find a compatible date and pushing yourself to extreme mental limits on “The Real World,” or being physically torn apart on previous “Challenge” cycles.
These “Are You the One” kids proved on Wednesday night (May 25), that they are not worthy to be on the same show as Johnny Bananas, Sarah, KellyAnne, Wes, Jenna or even Ashley Brooke. The latter being this season’s most surprising contestant. She may be absolutely crazy, but the girl is primed and ready to compete. Even Nicole shows more promise than these former dating show bums.
Now, it takes a lot to rattle host TJ Lavin. He is the most chill and lovable biker boy alive. His deadpan delivery of explaining the rules to the mostly deft contestants perfectly compliments their rowdy over-the-top behavior.
Lavin is highly respected among the show’s contestants. Him saying, “You killed it” to a competitor is the equivalent of receiving a Medal of Honor. He’s been hosting the show since Season 11, previously famous in his own right as one of the best BMX riders in the world. In Oct. 2010, while competing in a Dew Tour event, Lavin was left in a medically induced coma after sustaining critical injuries in a crash. Things became even more grim when he developed pneumonia while in the coma, but he fought his way back to health. Lavin was able to return home a month later and work his way to a full recovery.
Knowing Lavin’s history, it’s easy to understand why Wednesday night’s drama seriously pissed him off. Everyone knows there’s only thing for which he has zero tolerance for: quitters.
Former “Are You The One” contestant Brandon missed his girlfriend too much and decided he wants to go home. By default, this means that his partner Briana has to go leave, too. Remaining ambivalent towards her feelings, he sticks to the decision as he just can’t hack this competitive environment in Mexico.
Disappointed, Lavin asks, “You’ve seen the show before?” But that’s just the start of it. He continues, “You know how I feel about quitters. You’re robbing Briana of her share of $350,000. Life changing money gone because you wanna quit. Don’t take care. Hope to see you never.”
After apologizing to Briana for her partner’s decision, Lavin’s frustration escalates. “That was some horseshit,” he says … and all the other contestants agree.
“What a pussy,” Tony says.
“My partner’s a bitch and I have to go home,” Briana laments.
“You’re a waste of time and a waste of space,” Johnny Reilly says.
Zap2it has interviewed most of the competitors on “Rivals III” and they have complained about how hard it is to be cut off from the world while filming and how they miss their privacy and loved ones. But, they are all also very quick to say how lucky they are to be living in an exotic country and competing on a reality show with the chance of winning a ton a money.
Overall, it seems all the “Are You the One?” contestants are dead weight with their obnoxious and whiney nature. It would actually be best if they all took Brandon’s lead, and quit. We’d miss you never.
“The Challenge: Rivals III” airs on Wednesday nights at 10 p.m. ET/PT on MTV.
