zack pearlman the inbetweeners mtv 325 'The Inbetweeners' Zack Pearlman: 'Jay is despicable'Zap2it: How do you describe your character Jay?

Zack Pearlman: Jay is despicable. With that, I think later you will see some parts of his being that are little bit less despicable.

Zap2it: How does Jay view himself?

Zack Pearlman: He sees himself as a king. He is the only idiot in the kingdom. He is just a truly dumb and immature 16- or 15-year-old.

Zap2it: Is he fun to play?

Zack Pearlman: It’s a really weird character to play, especially when you make the decision you don’t have any redeeming qualities. Any interaction Jay has with an adult, that’s where you see his redeeming qualities. At his core, he is still 15 and incredibly awkward. And he is trying to get through high school in his own way. He thinks being an alpha male pounding his chest is his way to get through.

Zap2it: How recent are these situations to you? I guess that’s a polite way of asking your age.

Zack Pearlman: The beginning of high school is a little bit of stretch; I am 24.

Zap2it: What was your high school like?

Zack Pearlman: I went to Pioneer High School in Ann Arbor (Mich.). We were the Pioneer Pioneers, and while I went there I never realized how insane that was.

Zap2it: Any high-school memories about the boy/girl issues such as what Jay encounters?

Zack Pearlman: Not everything is completely accurate, but every interaction with a girl — that stuff is totally real. There’s no way to combat how strange and outrageous it is.
