Cinemax's "The Knick" faced a daunting task when it came time to recreate 1900s New York City: Coming up with authentic yet cool costumes to clothe its colorful cast of characters.

"The reality of 1900 is there are not many costumes that still exist," costume designer Ellen Mirojnick says in Zap2it's exclusive sneak peek at Best Buy version of "The Knick's" Season 1 Blu-ray. "We needed doctors, we needed nurses, we needed immigrants, rich, poor -- basically we started from scratch."

For Clive Owen's Dr. John W. Thackery, the design team had a lot of freedom. Mirojnick remembers that Owen suggested David Bowie as an inspiration for Thackery's look, "and then we were off."

"She said to me at one point, 'You can do anything you like because of the guy you are and what you do,'" Owen recalls of his conversations with the costume designer. "I'm a drug addict. I don't necessarily conform to those rules. There was great freedom with that."

"The Knick" Season 1 Blu-ray hits store shelves on Tuesday, Aug. 11.
