After eight long years of monsters, moonstones and magic, "The Vampire Diaries" is about to end for good. If you're not emotional about it, you're doing this whole 'fan' thing wrong.
Still, there's a lot to cover in the series finale, and several threads left dangling. Stefan (Paul Wesley) and Caroline (Candice King) finally walked down the aisle, but there's still the pesky matter of him being human and her being a vampire. Bonnie's (Kat Graham) life has been left literally hanging in the balance... And we can't forget that whole hell's bell thing, thanks to Vicky Donovan (Kayla Ewell).
Even after all that, we still have to take into account Katherine and Elena's (Nina Dobrev) return.
With the entire town of Mystic Falls hanging in the balance, it's hard to focus on happily ever afters, but we'll still speculate about who we think will get their happy ending... And who will get left in the dust.
Unfortunately, for Damon to get his happy ending, Bonnie has to die, and we don't imagine he'll be too happy trading in the life of his best friend for his happily ever after. Then there's the issue of the cure to figure out. In order to live a human life with Elena, Damon has to drink the cure from Stefan, which would kill him. Sorry, Delena fans, but we're officially worried. Damon's got to kill two of the three people he loves most in order to get the girl, and that doesn't seem likely.
Stefan's future looks bleak, no matter which way you slice it. His human/vampire relationship with Caroline is adorable and happy now, but it seems built to break given that he'll be 40 one day and married to a girl who still looks like a teenager. There's also the chance that Stefan could be the major character death slated for the finale -- now that he's human, he's just so much more breakable! We'll keep our fingers crossed for Stefan's happy ending, but we're not holding our breath.
After being stuck in a coffin all these years, we just can't see Elena getting anything other than a happy ending. No matter which Salvatore brother that ending is with, she's going to go live her best life. And who knows, maybe "The Vampire Diaries" will pull a "True Blood" and have her end up with neither of them?
Bonnie's final scene in the penultimate episode has everyone pretty alarmed about her future -- and rightly so. The only way Elena can be awake in the finale is if Bonnie is dead, which means our favorite Bennett witch is likely getting killed off. She'd be a pretty predictable major character death, but... We just don't see a way out of this.
Regardless of whether Stefan and Caroline manage to make it work as a human and vampire, we're imagining a happy ending for Caroline Forbes. She's got her girls, a potential new school to run and an eternity stretching out in front of her. One day, Caroline is finally going to stretch her wings and explore the world, and that's a happy ending worth having.
We're a little paranoid that Matt (Zach Roerig) will be the big death everyone's been talking about. It's baffling that he's made it this far as a measly human, and it's making us nervous. If he does survive, we're willing to bet his ending will be less than happy, seeing as Vicky was the one to ring the town bell. Unless she's miraculously saved from the consequences of her actions, Matt could lose his sister all over again.
You can't just waltz into Mystic Falls, blow off the Steroline
June March Wedding, open up hell on earth and then walk away unscathed. As much as we love Katherine Pierce, we don't see her tale ending on a happy note, especially if her appearance causes a major character to die.
Thankfully, we at least know that Alaric (Matt Davis) will be making it to "The Originals" this year, so we're about 100 percent sure he'll survive the finale. We've also got high hopes for this magical school he wants to start. Alaric was always a pretty stellar teacher, and now he can create a safe space for magical children to learn without getting expelled for setting stuff on fire.
Even after being brutally murdered, Enzo's happy ending seems a little out of reach. However, even as a ghost Enzo is still a great guy, and he seems truly at peace in this alternate dimension Bonnie has created. Maybe after her inevitable death, Bonnie can join him there? If there's anyone who deserves a break, it's Bonnie and Enzo...
"The Vampire Diaries" series finale airs Friday (March 10) at 9 p.m. ET/PT on The CW.
