There’s no denying that Sawyer Fredericks made a memorable first impression during his “Voice” blind auditions. But during his Monday (April 13) night Top 12 performance of John Lennon’s “Imagine,” he proved why he’s still a top contender in this race.

The 16-year-old singer put every ounce of emotion he has into the song, and so when he messed up, his emotion covered for him. Early on in the song, his voice cut out at the end of a note, but it just ended up giving him motivation and fuel for the rest of the song. And, at the end of the performance, coach Pharrell Williams made sure to point out that his mistake helped him sound more authentic.

However, the best part of Fredericks’ performance is that he actually broke out into a smile, which is a rare thing for the usually serious and soft-spoken singer. He listened to mentor Reba McEntire’s advice about appearing happy while performing such an inspiring song, and it turned out well for him.

“The Voice” airs on Mondays and Tuesdays at 8 p.m. ET/PT on NBC.
