“Timeless” returns from the holiday break on Monday, (Jan. 16),  and Screener has a sneak peek of what’s to come. Based on this clip and teaser photos, it appears that the winter premiere will be extremely tense with a dose of magical assistance from an infamous historical character…

Lucy (Abigail Spencer), has been kidnapped by the team’s adversary Flynn (Goran Visnjic), and taken to Chicago’s World Fair in 1893. Why? We have no idea — but Wyatt (Matt Lanter) and Rufus (Malcolm Barrett) are willing to do whatever they can to get her back.

What we do know is that Flynn remains steadfast in his goal to rid the world of Rittenhouse, as if it never existed. His laser focus to avenge his wife and child know no bounds. It’s a little scary to wonder all the possible reasons Flynn is keeping Lucy prisoner — or what he’ll do if she doesn’t comply with whatever dangerous scheme he’s planning.

In this preview of episode 11, Rufus — having boldly refused to work as a double agent or spy on his time-traveling cohorts — is less worried about his own safety than that of Lucy’s.

“Do you have any idea how much trouble your in?” Connor Mason (Paterson Joseph) asks Rufus. “This was your last chance. You should run.” While he formerly seemed like Rufus’s adversary, it now appears Mason has his protege’s best interests at heart. He insists Rufus get a new passport, new identity, offshore accounts, and uproot his entire family into hiding.

“I’m not going anywhere,” Rufus says, “until we find Lucy.”

Even though Mason find his actions to be foolish, Rufus and Wyatt quickly prepare their plan of attack before heading to 1893. Together they run through a list of possible targets Flynn has in mind while attending Chicago’s World Fair: Helen Keller? Not likely. Thomas Edison? Susan B. Anthony? … Teddy Roosevelt? (Who will become President eight years later?)

Timeless - Houdini

These are all good guesses, but it seems a much different kind of famous face from the late 19th century will be joining the “Timeless” crew in the Windy City: The one and only Harry Houdini. Will this escape artist turn out to be helpful with saving Lucy? Or will he lead Rufus and Wyatt to an even more perilous position? We’ll have to wait and see.

“Timeless” returns on Monday, Jan. 16, at 10 p.m. ET/PT on NBC.
