Gillian Anderson and David Ducovny as Scully and Mulder in "The X-Files"

It’s not just Mulder (David Duchovny) and Scully (Gillian Anderson) who will be returning to take a look at more supernaturally-tinged mysteries. No, FOX just released a new poster featuring one of the original series’ most memorable characters: the evil Cigarette Smoking Man (William B. Davis), also known as Smoking Man, and also known as Cancer Man.

Over the course of “The X-Files,” The Smoking Man went from appearing only in silhouette to serving as the series’ chief antagonist. As the seasons went on, he gained more and more power. His identity was eventually revealed to be C.G.B. Spender, a powerful businessman who had access and influence within the FBI, always a step ahead of lowly agents Mulder and Scully.

Spender was one of the leaders of The Syndicate, the vast conspiracy behind the series and responsible for extra-terrestrial presence on Earth. The Cigarette Smoking Man even got his own backstory episode. But though he became more transparent as the seasons passed, it looks like the show’s revival is going to send Cancer Man back into the shadows, at least for the purposes of this ad campaign.

The revival already made a small nod to Smoking Man in their last teaser, but the poster adds more weight to his role in Mulder and Scully returning to TV.

There are still a few months left before the premiere of “The X-Files” on Jan. 24, 2016, and in the meantime, it’s hard to wait to find out how the new storyline will incorporate old villains like the Smoking Man in a new way 20 years later.
