“You’re the Worst” got renewed for Season 3, much to the delight of its small-but-mighty fan base. At the 2016 TCA winter press tour Saturday (Jan. 16), creator Stephen Falk offered up a couple tidbits about the third season, including a “tentative yes” on Sunday Funday making its third appearance.
However, Falk wants to be clear that the writers’ room just started arcing out the season, so nothing is set in stone.
“For us to do [Sunday Funday] again, we’ll have to think of something that doesn’t try to top [previous ones] but makes sense. If we have the right idea — I think we have the right idea already, so a tentative yes,” says Falk. He adds that Season 3 will pick up right from the moment Season 2 ended.
“If it holds — and this may not hold — but right now we will start Season 3 like literally right after that [the ‘I love you’ scene]. I think time jumps are useful for certain shows, but it feels like a later season thing [for us] when we want to mix stuff up,” says Falk.
He also says that they’re not setting out to try to “top” Season 2.
“We like to make sure we’re telling one cohesive story per season that certainly continues from the last season … we’re trying hard not to ‘top’ this season in terms of some issue that we’re dealing with, like we did with depression,” says Falk. “It’s a very seductive idea, but I feel like it would feel like we’re trying too hard. So we’re just kind of continuing with the fallout from last season, always moving the characters forward and maybe some of them will fall, we’ll see. But we don’t know everything yet.”
